Alex grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Although he had a bike almost
all of his life and did some distance riding as a teenager, it
wasn’t until he was 29 that he started riding seriously.
He started riding with the local bike club, including some
century rides. During that first summer, he worked on
his own bike and spent a lot of time at the bike shops in Cedar Rapids
and then began working at one of those shops. While working
for a bicycle frame builder in Ames, Iowa,
he built his own bicycle frame. He cycled to Texas six times, including
two tours with his sweetie Patti Zwick.
Alex started working at W.O.B. in 1982. His cycling is primarily
road riding and commuting to work. Other interests include
building lightweight indoor free flight model airplanes, reading, and
creating art works, including wire bicycle sculptures.
